PZ Svirče Winery

The Svirče Agricultural Cooperative is located in the picturesque village of Svirče, in the heart of Hvar Island. The cooperative’s history dates back to 1929, and after ceasing operations in 1969, it was revitalized in 1997, becoming a leader in wine production and a holder of the geographical origin protection. By entering the organic production certification system in 2002, the cooperative began its journey toward creating Croatia’s first premium organic wines. Today, PZ Svirče manages 120 hectares of vineyards, spread across the sunny southern slopes of Hvar and the island’s interior. The cooperative unites 88 members and nearly the same number of partners, providing support for planting, equipment, machinery, and modernizing production. Their offerings include a wide range of wines, from four premium labels of Plavac Mali (Ivan Dolac, Ivan Dolac Barrique, Ivan Dolac Selection, and Mediteraneo), to eight quality wine labels such as Plavac Hvar, Pošip de Luxe, Bogdanuša, and Opolo, as well as the dessert wine For, made from the indigenous Bogdanuša variety. Additionally, they produce two table wine labels made from white and red varieties. A standout among their wines is Ivan Dolac Barrique, Croatia’s first organically certified Plavac Mali. It is crafted from vineyards located on the southern slopes of the island, above beaches stretching from Medvid Bod to Jagodna. These vineyards, at an average altitude of 150 meters, yield grapes with an alcohol content that has been enhanced by the use of organic fertilizers. The wine undergoes fermentation for 25-30 days with natural yeasts and ages for 12-15 months in Slavonian oak barrels, blending traditional methods with modern technology. The Svirče Cooperative has set high standards in organic production, and their wines, such as “Ivan Dolac” and “For,” represent the pinnacle of domestic organic wine production, proudly carrying Hvar’s traditions to the global wine stage.
