About winery

The Carić family from Vrboska on the island of Hvar has been engaged in viticulture for generations. With the founding of the company Vino-Hvar d.o.o., they began producing their own wines under the name Vina Carić. They cultivate approximately 5 hectares of vineyards across various locations in the Hvar wine region, with a small portion of grapes sourced from cooperative growers. They grow indigenous varieties such as Plavac Mali, Bogdanuša, Kuč, Maraština, Darnekuša, and Pošip.
The Carić family vineyards are located in several areas, including the “Ager Pharensis” (during Roman times) or “Chora Pharou” (during Greek times), now a UNESCO-protected site. This historic area, with its preserved Greek cadastral plan and dry stone walls, is a testament to the centuries-old efforts of Hvar farmers. In this area, they grow white varieties that produce wines such as Bogdanuša, Cesarica, and Stolno Bijelo Carić.
On the terraced vineyards around Svirače, known as “bonda” vineyards, Plavac Mali is cultivated. These small plots, enclosed by dry stone walls, yield grapes for Rosé Marino, Jubo’v red, and Stolno Crno Carić wines. The Plavac Mali from this area is characterized by a unique “terroir” due to the well-drained soil and airy microclimate.
The vineyards on the southern slopes of Plaže, such as Zavala and Ivan Dolac, are situated on steep inclines with carbonate soil and a high skeletal content. Sunny days and the terrain’s slope enable the production of premium wines like Plovac Ploški and Plovac Ploški Barrique.
Their portfolio includes nine labels, with one of the highlights being a young Plavac Mali called **Na dobro von Mlodo vino dojdi!** The label is inspired by the Hvar tradition of “kolendanje,” which coincides with the time of enjoying young wine. This special wine is released to the market each year on November 24th, the eve of St. Catherine’s Day, marking the start of the “kolendanje” season on Hvar. The offer also highlights the premium wine of the Plavac Mali variety, named Veli Visko, as well as the sparkling wine Danica, made from the indigenous Croatian variety Bogdanjuša. Their wines are available for tasting in the cozy ambiance of the Carić tavern, located in Vrboska.
