Krystal Modus Winery

Winery Krystal Modus, located in Vrgorac, is a family winery with a long tradition of viticulture and winemaking, nurtured by the Franić family. Until the 2000s, wine was produced exclusively for family and friends, but every generation brings something new. It was the young and ambitious Goran Franić who started a new chapter in the wine history of Vrgorac. After graduating in agronomy in Sarajevo in 1992, he moved to Vrgorac, where he soon found himself in the midst of the Homeland War. After the war, he got married and moved to the island of Brač for his first job, but it did not meet his expectations. In 1996, he decided to return to his hometown near Vrgorac, where he started growing apples and plums. Although he dedicated himself to fruit growing, his family owned three vineyard plots. After ten years, he decided to follow his dream and focus on producing premium wine. In consultation with fellow agronomists, he selected a grape variety to begin his winemaking journey. His search led him to the nearly extinct Trnak grape variety, and in 2007, the first 2,000 vines of Trnak were planted. In 2011, he produced Croatia’s first premium red wine made from Trnak, followed by the first commercial release in 2012. The winery continued to grow, expanding the vineyard in 2013 with an additional 3,000 vines of Rukatac. In 2016, Trnak production was increased with 7,500 new vines, cultivated using the traditional and reliable grafting technique. With a vision of creating a flagship white wine, the winery started cultivating Zlatarica in 2018. Today, Krystal Modus offers four wine labels: Stallion 2020, a red wine from Trnak; Bijela Vila, a white wine from Rukatac; Rose Krystal, a rosé from Trnak; and Zlatarica, a wine from the eponymous indigenous variety.
