Matela Winery

Winery Matela, located in Kaštel Sućurac, cultivates Crljenak Kaštelanski and Plavac Mali and has recently started growing Glavinuša on the slopes of Kozjak—an indigenous grape variety historically used for producing Kaštela Prošek. Today, Matela Winery continues this tradition, crafting Prošek from dried grape berries. In addition, they produce wines from Babica, Pošip, Maraština, Chardonnay, and the almost forgotten Vlaška variety. Scientific research has confirmed that the American Zinfandel originates from Crljenak Kaštelanski, a native Dalmatian variety that is also one of the parent grapes of Plavac Mali. This historical discovery inspired many families in Kaštela, including the Kovač Family, also known as Matela, to revive and preserve Crljenak Kaštelanski. Matela Winery offers eleven wine labels, including Vlaška, Pošip Barrique, Pošip Sur Lie, Maraština, Chardonnay, Kaštelanski Crno Cuvee, Crljenak Kaštelanski Esenca, Crljenak Kaštelanski Tradicija, Plavac Mali, Kaštelanska Babica, and Kaštelanska Babica Opol. Additionally, they produce two sparkling wines—a white sparkling wine from Maraština and a rosé sparkling wine from Crljenak. Over the years, Matela Wines have received numerous awards and recognitions, reaffirming the family’s dedication to top-quality winemaking.
