Matošin Winery

In the hinterland of Primošten lies the Matošin Winery, passionately dedicated to preserving the tradition of local grape varieties. Ivo Matošin traded the captain’s bridge of ships around the world for the serenity of the Primošten karst, with a view that surpasses even the most beautiful harbors. With great care, he cultivates Babić, an indigenous variety of the Šibenik region, in a vineyard with almost a century of history, first planted in 1928 by his grandfather Ivo, after returning from America. In recent years, the winery has been modernized with a new cellar and tasting room, though even with GPS, visitors often find it challenging to locate. The greatest reward for reaching this remote location is undoubtedly the breathtaking view from the tasting terrace, perched at 260 meters above sea level, stretching all the way to Grebaštica and Šibenik, over rugged valleys and winding villages beneath the Orlice hills. Matošin wines are crafted using an ecological approach, with minimal intervention, staying true to the traditional winemaking methods of the Primošten region. Ivo Matošin personally tends to the vineyards and cellar, with occasional help from his son and a friend of his late father, Rosario. He produces between three and five thousand bottles annually, and the labels artistically depict elements of nature – earth, sun, stone, and grapes. Babić is the heart of this winery, with vineyards cascading down the slopes below the cellar. Among the wines, Babić Zero 2018 stands out as a natural, unfiltered wine, made with minimal intervention in the cellar. Babić Reserva 2016 exudes aromas of cherry and oak, with a full-bodied taste and a long-lasting finish. Babić 2017 is similarly powerful yet easy to drink, featuring pronounced notes of blueberry and cherry. Alongside the red wines, the winery also offers an elegant rosé made from the same variety.
