Putalj Winery

Putalj Winery, located on the slopes of Kozjak above Kaštel Sućurac, began its commercial journey with the release of the 2010 Putalj Zinfandel. In the early vintages (2010-2012), Putalj was a cuvée of 85% Zinfandel and 15% Plavac Mali, aged for six months in Slavonian oak barrels. The wine is medium-bodied, offering aromas of sour cherry, vanilla, and spice, with a firm tannin structure and well-balanced acidity. Since 2013, the winery has expanded its production to three labels: Putalj Zinfandel, Putalj Plavac Mali, and Putalj Rosé. From 2014 onwards, a special Winemaker’s Selection blend has been available exclusively to winery guests for tasting and purchase. The vineyards on Putalj, an area known for the thousand-year-old Church of St. George and the historic mention in Prince Trpimir’s 852 charter, are the legacy of Anton Kovač and his family. Viticulture has been a long-standing tradition, carefully preserved through generations. Kovač revived his family’s vineyards in 2000 and dedicated himself fully to winemaking by 2007. Over time, he expanded his holdings, built a modern winery, and restored the family home, creating a welcoming space for wine tasting. Since 2010, Putalj Winery has been hosting wine tours, attracting visitors from all over the world. With around 20,000 vines of Crljenak and Plavac Mali thriving in his vineyards, Kovač takes great pride in both his wines and the winery’s distinctive label. The minimalist yet symbolic design represents the deep history of Kaštela, the Putalj vineyards, and the family’s heritage—featuring an image that evokes a vine, a wine glass, and even a bottle opener, all set against the backdrop of the Kaštela Bay and the historic Putalj hillside, where vineyards have flourished for over a millennium.
