About winery
Roki’s is a family-owned company established in 1991, continuing a two-century tradition of winemaking. According to legend, the first member of the Roki family arrived from Genoa in the early 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars. A shoemaker by trade, he acquired a house in Plisko Polje and vineyards through marriage to a wealthy local woman, abandoning his craft to focus on viticulture and winemaking, which remain the family’s passion to this day. For many years, the Roki family sold wine to wholesalers who distributed it throughout the region. With the return of Niko Roki from Australia, a new chapter in production and marketing began. In the early 1980s, the family was among the first in Croatia to bottle their own wine, selling it to restaurants and stores, primarily in Split and Zagreb. In 1998, the family produced their first sparkling wine, “Smash.” As tourism on Vis grew, they opened a tavern in their family courtyard, offering wine tastings to visitors. A modern wine cellar and tasting room were built in 2017 as part of the family restaurant, led by Niko’s children, Monika and Oliver. All wines are produced according to ecological principles under the supervision of “Biotechnicon” Ltd. For over 20 years, the family’s vineyards have been cultivated organically, using only sulfur and Bordeaux mixture to combat diseases, without synthetic fertilizers, highlighting the uniqueness of Vis’s climate and terrain. Roki’s offers three types of premium wines made from the native varieties Bugava, Plavac Mali, and Rukatac. The vineyards are located in Volijok and Vergotovo in Dračevo Polje, with Rukatac grown in Vošćica and Plavac Mali cultivated in Vela Jubišća, Milna, Vošćica, and Volijok. Wine tastings are held in the tavern, where visitors can enjoy authentic Dalmatian specialties and delicacies, creating a unique experience that blends wine, tradition, and local gastronomy.
