Škaulj Winery was founded in 2003 by the visionary Šime Škaulj, and today it stands among the most respected wineries in Croatia. From the very beginning, it embraced an organic approach to viticulture, becoming a pioneer of sustainable production in the region. Inspired by their example, other wineries in the Nadin area followed suit, making the region a leader in organic winemaking in Croatia. Today, the winery is run by Tomislav Škaulj, Šime’s son, who has modernized production and continues to raise quality standards with every vintage. By blending innovation and tradition, Škaulj Winery has become a symbol of the potential of Northern Dalmatia’s unique terroir.
The vineyards cover 15 hectares across two main locations – Tučkuša and Nadinsko Blato. TThe Tučkuša vineyard, located 170 meters above sea level, is characterized by white soil with sand, limestone and stone, which offers excellent conditions for growing Maraština. It is located near the renowned Korlat position and shares similar soil characteristics. The Nadinsko Blato vineyards grow in deep, diverse flysch soil, ideal for planting various grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay, Crljenak, Plavina, and Grenache. Various training systems are applied – double and single cordon, and double Guyot – allowing the wines to express the complexity of the terroir. Škaulj Winery currently offers ten wine labels – five red, several white, Rosé, sparkling, and dessert wines. A standout is the Rosé sparkling wine from 2018, made using the traditional method from the Tribidrag variety.
One of the winery’s signature wines is Carl Gustaf, a 2017 cuvée of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was named in honor of the visit by King Carl Gustaf XVI and Queen Silvia of Sweden in 2013. The royal couple was impressed with the wines and hospitality, and the winery received official permission to use the royal coat of arms on the wine label. Among numerous awards, a silver medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London stands out – the first such recognition for a winery from Zadar County. In 2015, following Croatia’s EU accession, their Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were selected as official wines of the European Parliament, further cementing Škaulj Winery’s role as an ambassador of Croatian wine excellence.
