About winery

The Zlatan Otok family winery is located in Sveta Nedjelja on the island of Hvar, with vineyards spanning 120 hectares across the prestigious southern slopes of the island, at the foot of Biokovo, and on the hills of Jadrtovac near Šibenik. Founded in 1986 by Zlatan Plenković, a pioneer of modern winemaking, the winery is now one of the largest and most awarded in Croatia. In addition to grapes from its own vineyards, the winery purchases additional quantities from 50 hectares cultivated by local partners. On the southern slopes of Hvar, where vineyards cover 7 hectares, Plavac Mali thrives, a variety that finds ideal conditions here. These vineyards, located on steep slopes with gradients of up to 40%, benefit from abundant sunshine and the stabilizing influence of the sea, which mitigates temperature fluctuations. At the foot of Biokovo, from Basta to Promajna, lies a 50-hectare region where vines grow at altitudes between 30 and 400 meters. This area is dominated by Plavac Mali, Crljenak, and Pošip, and its vineyards, planted in 2004, quickly began producing award-winning wines such as Zlatan Pošip, the first Croatian white wine to be named Decanter Regional Champion. The youngest and largest vineyard region, covering 65 hectares, is situated on the southern hills of Jadrtovac near Šibenik. Since 2014, these vineyards have been certified for organic farming. The varieties grown here include Plavac Mali, Babić, Crljenak, and Pošip, producing wines of exceptional quality. The winery cultivates a wide range of grape varieties, including Plavac Mali, Crljenak, Babić, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, and Grenache among the reds, and Pošip, Bogdanuša, Žilavka, Dubrovnik Malvasia, Chardonnay, and Yellow Muscat among the whites. Annually, they produce approximately 800,000 bottles of wine, including as many as 27 labels. The winery’s most renowned wine, Zlatan Plavac Grand Select, has achieved cult status. This wine is made from Plavac Mali grown on slopes as steep as 40%, free from industrial influences and synthetic substances, and aged for two years in French oak barriques. Zlatan Otok offers a unique experience at the “Bilo Idro” restaurant, featuring an underwater wine cellar where wine enthusiasts can enjoy a perfect blend of fine gastronomy and natural beauty.
