About winery

Winery Šafran successfully continues the centuries-old tradition of grapevine cultivation and winemaking in Breznički Hum, located halfway between Zagreb and Varaždin. The history of viticulture in this region dates back to 1692, and the winery was revived before World War I by Archbishop Antun Bauer, who planted a special variety of ancient grapevine – Zelenika. Today, with the help of modern technology, knowledge, and a passion for wine, Winery Šafran produces valued and award-winning wines on 20 hectares of vineyards with over 90,000 vines. The most represented varieties include Graševina, Riesling, and Traminer, while the red wines feature Portugieser and Blauberger. The winery is proud to still produce Mass wines, which are used in many churches, including the Archdiocese of Krakow. One of their proud achievements is having their wine selected for the chalice of Pope Benedict XVI for the Mass held at the Hippodrome in 2011. With a capacity of 500,000 liters, Winery Šafran uses both inox and wooden barrels for aging wines, and their labels, including Graševina and Manzoni, have won prestigious Decanter awards. In addition to winemaking, the winery offers innovative products such as Summerwine cocktail wine and mulled wine, which are the result of collaboration with the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology.
