About winery
Šoškić Winery was founded in 1992, when Siniša Šoškić from Zagreb, an electrical engineer by profession, decided to leave his primary vocation and turn his lifelong passion for wine into a full-time commitment. That same year, he recognized an irreversible professional calling for winemaking and embraced the rich viticultural and enological tradition of Plešivica. At the foot of this renowned wine region, he purchased three hectares of land and an old house, marking the beginning of his winemaking journey. In 1993, he planted his first vineyard, choosing Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Gris—varieties well-suited to the cooler climate and ideal natural conditions of Plešivica. The region is known for its high elevation, clean and constant airflow, and steep slopes that ensure excellent sun exposure for the vines. Today, the Šoškić family cultivates 8 hectares of their own vineyards, along with an additional 12 hectares under long-term lease. The estate is divided into two microzones: Gorička (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Yellow Muscat) and Rebra (Pinot Noir, Riesling, Graševina, Manzoni). The family-run winery now includes, alongside founder Siniša and his wife Dijana, their sons Leonardo and Vjekoslav, daughter Lana, and all vineyard workers.
Šoškić Winery is widely recognized for its “Taste of Terroir” wine line, known for its carefully managed production process. After pressing and destemming, the wines undergo cold maceration—white wines for 8 to 12 hours and red wines for 24 to 36 hours—to extract complex aromas and flavors. This is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation. Riesling from this line is aged for six months in large oak barrels, while Sauvignon Blanc, Graševina, Rosé, and Yellow Muscat complete their aging in stainless steel. Pinot Noir ferments in stainless steel tanks and then matures for 12 months in 500-liter oak barrels. All wines undergo bottle aging before release to achieve optimal quality. In 2001, the winery opened its first Šoškić wine shop to establish direct contact with consumers. Construction of the modern winery began in 2004 and was completed in 2010. The facility features state-of-the-art equipment and is divided into two main halls: one for vinification of fresh wines (100,000-liter capacity in stainless steel), and another for aging more complex wines in oak barrels (30,000-liter capacity).
In 2005, to round off the production process, Siniša Šoškić launched the production of brandies and liqueurs. He built a small distillery on the estate with a traditional copper still heated with wood, emphasizing a connection to nature and tradition. The range includes Walnut Liqueur (Orahovac), Honey Liqueur (Medica), Blueberry and Cherry Liqueurs, Herbal Brandy (Travarica), and the crown jewel: Dvor, a premium brandy made from the finest wine distillates of noble old Plešivica grape varieties.
The winery also stands out for its production of orange wines, most notably Haiku2—the first orange wine in history to win a Platinum Medal at the world’s most prestigious wine competition, Decanter. Haiku2 is made from hand-harvested grapes of two major varieties: Riesling and Manzoni Bianco. After spontaneous fermentation, it undergoes 200 days of maceration on the skins and is then aged for one year in tonneau barrels. Its successor, Haiku4, is crafted from four grape varieties, including Riesling and Pinot Noir—the remaining two kept as a family secret. The wine macerates for 30 days, is aged in tonneau barrels for one year, and is bottled unfiltered. Haiku5, the latest in this exclusive line, represents the peak of the family’s dedication to winemaking. It is made from carefully selected grapes of five different varieties, all grown in the Gorička vineyard.
