About winery
Šoštar Winery is located in the heart of the Ozalj-Vivodina winegrowing region and proudly upholds a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1912. Today, Elvis Šoštar continues this legacy with dedication, rooted in generations of knowledge and passion for viticulture.
A significant moment in the family’s history occurred in 1915, when great-grandfather Tomo went to war, and vineyard duties were taken over by great-grandmother Marija and the women of the household. In her honor, since 2015 the winery has hosted a traditional all-female grape harvest, now led by the prefect of Karlovac County, Martina Furdek Hajdin. During this event, Frankovka grapes are harvested and turned into wine labeled Marijaelena, named after both Marija and Elvis’s daughter Elena.
The winery cultivates about 28,000 vines across 5.5 hectares. Red varieties include Blaufränkisch, Portugiser, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. Among the white varieties are Riesling, Graševina, Traminac, Chardonnay, and a Cuvée made from six white grape varieties. Since 1996, the vineyards have been continuously renewed and expanded. With the recent planting of 3,000 vines on marl soil, Riesling is set to become the winery’s leading white variety in the coming years.
