Zdolc Winery

After the transition to a market economy in 1991, the Zagorje-Međimurje subregion experienced a boom in viticulture, with numerous skilled winegrowers beginning to independently process grapes from their own vineyards. Among them is Zdolc Winery from Klenica near Pregrada, a family that continues a centuries-old tradition of grape growing and winemaking with great devotion. The roots of their wine story date back to 1940, when great-grandfather Josip tended the vineyard with much effort and passion, using traditional farming methods. Knowledge and experience were passed down through generations, with careful selection of grape varieties to achieve the best wine quality. A major shift occurred when Josip Zdolc, father of current owner Robert Zdolc, introduced modern technologies and placed strong emphasis on vineyard protection. In 2011, the family opened a tasting room, considered one of the most beautiful in Zagorje, with a 100-year-old wooden wine press in front of it. A significant step forward came in 2019 with the transition to organic production. Today, Robert runs the family business together with his wife and relatives, blending inherited knowledge with formal education and hands-on experience. Winery Zdolc currently cultivates eight grape varieties: Graševina, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Belina, Green Silvaner, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and Merlot. Although Sauvignon Blanc is the most demanding variety, it is Robert’s favorite for the challenges and rewards it brings. The next step in their development is planting Yellow Muscat to further enrich their wine offering. The winery currently offers six wine labels and wine tasting experiences in their charming tasting room.
