Matić Winery

The Matić family winery, located in the small village of Baškoti in the municipality of Višnjan, boasts a tradition of winemaking and viticulture that spans over a hundred years. It all began when great-grandfather Grgo planted the first vineyards and olive trees. Subsequent generations have carefully maintained the estate, with a new chapter beginning in the 1990s when Milenko took over and elevated it to a higher level. Today, the fifth generation of winemakers in the family, his son Erik, a trained oenologist from the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb, is growing alongside him.
The Matić family currently cultivates around fifteen hectares of vineyards and plans to expand their vineyards and wine cellar in the future. The vineyards are planted on deep red soil, situated in a unique micro-location within the triangle of Kaštelir – Višnjan – Vižinada, where many prominent winemakers have their vineyards. The Matić Winery pays special attention to Istrian Malvasia, which is the most represented variety in their vineyards. Other varieties they grow include chardonnay, Yellow Muscat, Teran, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rose Muscat. They have twelve wine labels on the market, with some wines sold as open wine.
They have already won numerous domestic and international awards for their wines, particularly for their fresh and aged istrian malvasia. They are especially proud of their aged Istrian Malvasia “Afrodita” from the 2019 harvest, which won a gold medal at one of the most prestigious international wine competitions, Decanter, in 2022.
