Over a hundred years ago, the Ravnik family moved to Nova Vas from inland Istria, engaging in agriculture for their own needs across generations. Rafael Ravnik, in his early thirties, realized that living in large cities like Zagreb, Barcelona, and Frankfurt did not make him particularly happy, so he and his wife Tereza decided to settle in Istria.
In 2018, Rafael began preparing a small family plot of one hectare for a vineyard. Located not far from the village, the plot is on shallow red soil with a lot of stones, which made planting challenging. Recognizing that his basic knowledge of viticulture was insufficient, Rafael undertook a three-year program at the Agricultural Department of the Polytechnic of Rijeka.
In his vineyard, consisting of around five thousand vines, the predominant variety is Istrian malvasia, with smaller amounts of teran, refosco, and a bit of merlot. In the near future, Rafael plans to plant additional vines, aiming to expand to a maximum of three hectares of his own vineyards under organic production, for which he received certification in 2022.
