Gerstmajer Winery

Ivan Gerštmajer Zelember, the fourth generation of the well-known Gerštmajer winemaking family from Baranja, decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. He has always known that he would pursue viticulture, a passion confirmed by his graduation from the Secondary Agricultural School and the Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences in Osijek. The Gerstmajer winery is located in Zmajevac, in Baranja, and the family tradition of growing grapevines has lasted for over a century. The family wine cellar dates back to 1854, and the plans are to reduce the vineyard area from 15 to 10 hectares in order to remove old, unprofitable vines and plant new ones that will increase wine production. On the two hectares inherited from his grandfather, the original vines that started the family’s winemaking tradition will be preserved. The Gerstmajer wine estate is involved in agritourism and the production of wine from its own vineyards. The Gerštmajer family takes pride in their vineyards, located in an ideal position with a long history of grapevine cultivation, which dates back to the time before the Romans arrived. The 11-hectare vineyards produce premium wines, and Mihalj Gerštmajer believes that the optimal vineyard size is between 10 and 20 hectares, with an annual production of about 50 to 70 thousand bottles of wine. Gerstmajer Winery offers eight wine labels, including Graševina, Riesling, Traminac, Chardonnay, White Pinot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Frankovka, and Pinot Gris. The wine production ranges from dry to predicate wines, with wines such as Graševina, Riesling, Traminac, and Chardonnay, which carry the label of premium wines, being particularly notable for their late harvest origin. The oldest part of the vineyard, despite losing 70% of its vines, is known for its best Graševina, which the Gerštmajer family will preserve as long as the vineyard remains viable.
