The Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek upholds a centuries-old tradition of cultivating premium grape varieties and producing wine on the slopes of Dilj Gora in Trnava. The Archdiocesan winery, over 300 years old, is renowned for its sacramental wines, which reflect the spiritual peace and rich winemaking heritage of this region. The winemaking history of the archdiocese dates back to 1239 when Bosnian Bishop Ponsa relocated his bishopric to Đakovo. His successor, Bishop Petar Bakić, revitalized the estate and planted the first vineyards in Trnava. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Bishops Josip Čolnić, Antun Mandić, and Josip Juraj Strossmayer expanded vineyard areas in Trnava and Mandićevac, built cellars, and significantly advanced the region’s viticulture. As early as the 19th century, wines from the archdiocese were winning prestigious awards at exhibitions across Europe. Today, this rich legacy continues with the production of premium wines under four labels: Traminac, Chardonnay, Graševina, and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
