Sontacchi Winery

The winemaking tradition of the Sontacchi family dates back to 1900 when it was started by Tomaso Sontacchi, a vintner at the Vinkomir estate owned by Baron Turković in Kutjevo. From 1914 to 1932, he served as the estate manager, passing down his love for viticulture to his son Antun. Antun Sontacchi continued the family tradition and, between the two world wars, supplied Zagreb restaurants such as Novinarski Dom and Obrtnička Restauracija. His passion was inherited by his son Miroslav and later by his grandson Hrvoje. Today, the fifth generation of the winemaking family, brothers Antun and Krunoslav Sontacchi, carry on the family legacy. They have modernized the cellar, expanded the range of wines, and remained dedicated to traditional winemaking. In the center of Kutjevo, at Trg Graševine 4, they have renovated a cellar with a capacity of 40,000 liters, accompanied by a tasting room for 50 guests, sanitary facilities, and access for people with disabilities. The winery is also home to the world’s largest stone wine bottle. The vineyards are located on the southern slopes of Krndija, within the prestigious Kutjevo wine region, at an altitude of 250 to 350 meters. The Sontacchi family cultivates 1.5 hectares of their own vineyards and 1 hectare of cooperative plantings of Pinot Noir. At the Venje and Kutjevo – Vidim sites, they grow Graševina, Portugizac, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir, with red varieties making up 70% of production, setting them apart in a region renowned for Graševina. Their signature wine brand, “Kutjevački Kitokret,” has become the winery’s hallmark. Krunoslav Sontacchi, the official inheritor of the name, along with his brother Antun, has modernized the visual identity of the wine while preserving the authenticity and recognition of this iconic Portugizac. Their Pinot Noir has gained a cult status among wine lovers in Croatia, and years of dedication have brought numerous accolades. They have won gold medals at prestigious competitions, including Bonavita 2008 for Cabernet Franc, Bonavita 2010 for Graševina, Vinokapi Bonavita 2011 for Pinot Noir, and Bonavita 2013 for Kitokret. Additionally, they are proud recipients of multiple silver medals from wine events such as Bonavita, Vino-kap, and the Graševina Festival. The Sontacchi family continues to uphold tradition with great dedication, relying on classical winemaking methods. Their family farm is registered in the official list of producers within integrated production, further affirming their commitment to quality and sustainability.
